Cancer – The most dreaded disease in the world. With passing years there has been a rapid evolution in the world of medicine, but as there is a popular saying that “Man proposes, GOD disposes”, cancer is one such disease, where research is still going on.
What is cancer?
Cancer is a non-communicable and non-infectious disease. In this, a cell starts dividing abnormally, without any known reason and starts invading the normal tissues thus, destroying them.
Different Types of Cancer:-
There are different types of cancer that target different parts of bodies:-
- Breast Cancer
- Prostate Cancer
- Basal cell Cancer
- Lung Cancer
- Melanoma – Skin Cancer
- Colon Cancer
There are various symptoms of cancer, which if tested and detected early, still stand a chance to fight against it.
Now, as research is going on in the field of Cancer, researchers have been able to discover a gene in elephants called “Zombie Gene” which helps them to fight against this dreaded disease. This Zombie gene is also known as LIF6. It is a dead and non-functioning gene, in almost all the animals, except for elephants. Elephants are huge animals and for them to grow, cell division needs to happen, in the form of mitosis. But, elephants hardly ever succumb to cancer. LIF6 targets abnormal cells and kills them.
As per Dr. Vincent J. Lynch, from the University of Chicago, said: “Elephants have many copies of LIF Gene but elephants evolved in such a way that it triggered on the LIF6”. These zombie genes would destroy the damaged genes. It drills holes in mitochondria, which is the cell’s main energy source, causing the cell to die. So, whenever there is a genetic mistake in the DNA then zombie gene would kill the damaged cell, which might subsequently turn cancerous. So, when this LIF6 gene, was introduced to mice they also became cancer resistant. Still research is going on, and hopefully, in years to come, we might get a breakthrough in this high-risk disease.
