The advancement of technology is assisting the families of all those are affected with some serious medical ailments and hence need special care.

In the near future, patients of heart ailments with various levels of gravity may be advised by doctors to use special toilet seats at home. Now, what is so unique in these seats? The seat has a device that would monitor their movements every time they sit on it. The device sends alerts, if any unusualness is noticed that can trigger any heart trouble.

Developed by a team at the Rochester Institute of Technology, the seat is equipped with an electrocardiogram, ballistocardiogram, and a photoplethysmogram. These special features measure the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygenation levels, body weight and stroke volume, which is the amount of blood that the heart pumps out with each beat.

Distinct algorithms examine all that data, and regulate the patient’s health condition. It can disclose the prevailing heart condition i.e., if fine or is worsening – a conclusion can be arrived at much before a patient experiences any evident symptoms. Once developed further, the seat would then transmit a notification to the user’s physician.

The technology is now being developed by spin-off company Heart Health Intelligence, of which Conn is the CEO.
