The technique, called cold sintering, replaces the intense heat of typical kilns with pressure and water. Powdered calcium carbonate was mixed with water and put into a mold, where it was then compacted by a hydraulic press to form a solid. The process takes about an hour, and the final product is said to be as stiff as stone and able to withstand ten times more force than concrete.
