Using Citrus Peels to Clean Wastewater

A new process that uses citrus peels to clean heavy metals from wastewater could also help keep the peels. First drying the peels and then treating them with a chemical that causes the peels’ surface area and porosity to increase. The resulting material was granulated and packed in columns, where it acted as a filter to absorb the heavy metal from tainted water.  Citrus peels could offer an alternative to activated charcoal.
