Software System Detects Distracted Driving

A new software system able to detect the signs of texting while driving could alert drivers to potentially dangerous activities.
It relies on cameras installed in the vehicle that monitor and record unusual hand motions. That information is processed by a computer algorithm to determine what sorts of activities the driver was performing, which then allows the driver to be assigned a grade based on their level of safety threat. The system could one day be incorporated into self-driving cars, enabling the car to warn the driver or even take over if the driver’s actions are deemed too reckless.
